While the movies in Evergreen, CO are rather scarce in terms of theaters specifically within the city limits, there are some adjacent areas which also provide entertainment for moviegoers.

For those living in, or visiting the Evergreen area, here are some picks for local theaters:

AMC Bergen Park 7 Theater in Evergreen – This theater is within the Evergreen city limits, located at Evergreen Parkway and Bergen Parkway. It is a good choice for people who do not enjoy big crowds, allowing someone to be able to pick and choose a seat to his or her liking. It is also a good choice for those who might be more choosy about the comfort of the seating – known to be quite comfortable. The AMC Bergen Park 7 allows for online ticketing, making it convenient to purchase a ticket to stay ahead of lines when popular movies come to the theater.

UA Colorado Mills Stadium 16 Theater in Golden – While this theater is not located in the city limits of Evergreen, it is one of the closer movie theaters to the area as an option. It has received positive reviews for its pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff, but there have been some negative comments made about the lack of matinee pricing and scheduling options for the movies. Overall, the reviews for this theater that I studied were positive. There are several theaters in this establishment, including a giant screen so the selections of movies are quite good.

UA West Village Stadium 12 Theater in Lakewood – This is another theater that is rather close to Evergreen, but is not within the city limits. I was not able to locate much information on this theater in terms of consumer reviews, and what I did find was negative regarding the upkeep of the theater and the comfort of the seating.

For those seeking out a great experience for movies in Evergreen, CO (or close to that area), the first two theaters listed above are probably your best bet – and hopefully some changes will be made to improve the experience at the third pick to allow more options to residents and visitors.

If anyone has seen the new Tron Legacy Movie in 3D IMAX, you know, the future of movie theaters is right around the corner. With 12,000 watts of sound, an amazing 110′ picture and pristine pixels, the movie going experience is surely changing. But one thing I have noticed is how the movie theater lighting has not changed at all since I was a kid. Sure the lights dim a bit better than before, but there is still a certain element that can be worked on, and I think I have just the answer.

Movie theaters are generally owned by large movie houses that are based all around the country. They have deep pockets, but maybe not the necessary know-how to change their current system. Movie Theaters for 2011 should have new lighting systems that correspond with the stunning effects of their theater. To do this, two different lights come to mind.

The first lighting system is LED Lights. We have all heard of LED Lights, but why could they make the movie going experience better? LED Lights have a certain quality about them, which makes them perfect for a theater room. LED’s can be nearly any color imaginable, but they can also change colors as well. New age LED Lights have a red, green and blue LED light inside each bulb, which allows them to change to nearly any color imaginable by combining the lights in various degrees of brightness. Consider the effect the movie theater would have if each lighting fixture was changed out with a color changing LED Lighting fixture, and you would have a movie theater even James Cameron would be proud of. At the start of each movie, you could have a color that corresponds with the theme of the theater, but when the movie ends, and the up lights come on, you can turn the entire theater the cool teal color of the TRON world.

The second lighting system is EL Wire. EL Wire is a new lighting technology which is simply a copper wire with a powder coating over it that lights up. It comes in 10 beautiful colors and is pretty much made for movie theaters. EL Wire can line the stage, the walls, or even the walkways up the steps and isles. This can allow movie goers a safer passage, along with a fun lighting that will keep them coming back for more. EL Wire is waterproof, and can be stepped on, which makes it an ideal environment for movie theaters.

As we are moving into a digital age, these two lighting sources can help reface the way movie theaters look, and expand their markets.

50′s Drive in Movie Theaters

For those who were children or teenagers during the 1950s and 1960s, the drive in movie was the place to be on a summer evening. The classic drive in movie setup had a large screen set up outdoors. Sometimes this was a true screen, while other drive in theaters utilized the side of a building. A projection booth in the back created the image on the screen. Drive in movie theaters consisted not of seats, but of a large parking lot for cars. The sound was provided either by loudspeakers or by individual speakers designed to be hung from the window of each car. Some drive in movie theaters were set up to broadcast the audio by radio, and could be listened to through the car’s radio system rather than a separate speaker.

Drive in movies always had a concession stand for sodas, hot dogs, popcorn, candy, and all of the typical movie concessions still sold in today’s indoor theaters. Some added lawn chairs on patios in addition to the space for drive-in customers. Others offered propane heaters or other systems designed to entice customers to come to their theater, especially during the winter months.

The first drive-in theater had an unusual beginning as the brainchild of Richard M. Hollingshead Jr., whose family owned the R.M. Hollingshead Corporation Chemical Plant. In 1932 he began testing his idea of outdoor theaters in New Jersey, first by setting up a screen in his driveway and using this own Kodak movie projector.

Hollingshead was given a patent for his system in 1933. His first drive-in movie theater opened in Pennsauken, New Jersey, in June of 1933. Even though this first theater was only open three years, this family-friendly concept soon caught on in other locations. Similar theaters opened within two years in Pennsylvania, Galveston, Los Angeles, and Massachusetts. Soon, drive-in theaters were operating in nearly every state. There were about 100 of these theaters nationwide by World War II; as soon as the war ended, there were hundreds more, and the drive-in craze kept expanding.

Drive-in movie theaters were quite popular in part because they welcomed children to the show. In fact, many drive-in movie theaters added playgrounds or other attractions. Parents did not need to worry about their children interrupting the movie, or having to hire a babysitter to get an evening out.

The popularity of the drive-in theater peaked in the early 1960s, with around 4,000 drive-in theaters located across the United States. Drive-in theaters were increasingly being labeled as “immoral” because of the privacy the concept gave moviegoers. During the 1970s some drive-in theaters became less family-friendly, showing films targeted at adult moviegoers, or even pornographic films. In some areas, the land simply became too valuable to use as a drive-in theater, which usually operated only after twilight and only in the summer months. The drive-in theater also succumbed to other technology like color televisions and VCRs which became more popular modes for movie viewing.

Today, there are still a handful of drive-in movie theaters sprinkled throughout the United States. If you’re looking for a nostalgic time, watch a drive-in movie this summer. Today, this method for watching movies is still a great family activity. Many also go to drive-in theaters for the novelty of the experience. For those old enough to remember, and even for a new generation, there’s nothing quite like the drive-in movie experience. Along with other classic 50′s entertainment like pedal cars, sock hops, and soda fountains, the drive in theater stuck in people’s minds long after its 1950s heyday ended.
